On July 12, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s youngest two kids, twins Knox and Vivienne, finally became adults.
On Sunday, the twins celebrated their milestone 18th birthday, officially meaning that all of the former couple’s kids are now adults. This includes 24-year-old Maddox, 22-year-old Pax, 21-year-old Zahara and 20-year-old Shiloh.
Angelina and Brad’s lengthy divorce
With all of the kids as adults comes a conclusion to a long and oft bitter chapter between Brad and Angelina, which began with Angelina’s decision to file for divorce in 2016 citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Their divorce battle was drawn out for nearly a decade, not being finalized until 2024, although the legal disputes over shared assets like Château Miraval continue. It also took them multiple years to arrive upon a custody agreement as well.
The custody arrangement for Brad and Angelina’s kids
In 2021, nearly five years after the Maleficent actress filed for divorce, the F1 star was granted joint custody over their children. However, when the judge on their case was removed, the agreement reverted back to a 2018 ruling, which gave Angelina primary physical custody and Brad received “custodial time” and visitation rights over their minor children.
With Knox and Vivienne becoming adults, however, that agreement comes to an end, thereby allowing Angelina to embark on more travel and spend time away from California, which she was tied to due to the divorce agreement, as she’s previously explained.
Why Angelina wants to leave the U.S. when her kids turn 18
Angelina told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024 that while she has ties to Los Angeles because she grew up in the city, as the daughter of renowned film star Jon Voight, she hopes to leave once her kids come of age.
“I am here because I have to be here from a divorce, but as soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave,” she shared. “When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety.”
“I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be … that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here. [After Los Angeles,] I’ll spend a lot of time in Cambodia. I’ll spend time visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world.”
Cambodia was where she adopted her first child Maddox from. Over the past three years, several of the couple’s kids have either legally filed to drop their dad’s last name “Pitt” (like Shiloh and Maddox), or colloquially gone by their mother’s name instead (Knox, Vivienne and Zahara).
The Couture star’s feelings about the state of the United States
As one of Hollywood’s most prominent humanitarians and international human rights activists, Angelina has also spoken candidly about her disillusionment with the state of her home country, explaining as much while at the San Sebastián Film Festival in September 2025.
“I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country,” she stated. “I’ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life… My worldview is equal, united, and international.”
“Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous. These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. These are very, very heavy times we are living in together.”
