Barbara Hershey made a rare public appearance this week, looking worlds away from her iconic on-screen persona in the hit movie Beaches.

The 78-year-old actress appeared onstage alongside TCM host Alicia Malone during “A Conversation with Barbara Hershey” at the 2026 TCM Classic Film Festival, held at The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles on Saturday May 2, 2026.

For the occasion, Barbara opted for an elegant yet understated look, embracing a rich tonal palette. She wore a soft, rust-coloured tailored blouse with a classic collar and button-down front, layered over a coordinating satin skirt that fell to mid-calf. The skirt featured delicate embroidered floral detailing scattered across the fabric, adding texture and a subtle romantic touch to the ensemble.

Her silver-grey hair was styled in a relaxed, shoulder-length cut, parted at the centre and softly feathered around her face, giving her a natural, effortless finish. She kept her makeup light and refined.

Barbara is perhaps best known for her role as Hilary Whitney in the 1988 tearjerker Beaches, where she starred opposite Bette Midler. The film became a cultural phenomenon, telling the decades-spanning story of an unlikely friendship between two women from very different backgrounds.

While Bette’s performance brought humour and energy, Barbara’s portrayal of the poised and ultimately tragic Hilary grounded the film emotionally – and left audiences reaching for tissues. The movie was a box office success and has since become a beloved classic, with its themes of loyalty, loss and enduring friendship continuing to resonate.

Bette recently shared a throwback pic of the pair on her Instagram, captioning it: “It’s a BEACHES reunion!  Here I am with the great Barbara Hershey!  We go back a-ways!!!”

Following the success of Beaches, Barbara went on to enjoy a long and varied career across film and television. She earned critical acclaim for roles in projects such as Hannah and Her Sisters, The Last Temptation of Christ and later Black Swan, proving her versatility across genres and decades.

Off-screen, Barbara has largely kept her personal life out of the spotlight. She shares one son, actor Tom Carradine, with her former partner David Carradine.

Over the years, she has been linked to several high-profile relationships, including a long romance with actor Naveen Andrews, whom she met on the set of the 1998 film My Own Country.

Despite stepping back from the constant glare of Hollywood, Barbara has continued to take on selective roles, often favouring character-driven projects. Her recent appearance at the TCM festival offered a rare glimpse of the star, as she reflected on the films that shaped her career and the legacy she has built.
