Clive Davis, one of the most storied figures in the music industry, has died at the age of 94. The news was confirmed by his family.
Davis was recently taken to a hospital in New York due to some respiratory issues. He was recovering at home when he died.
Davis’ family shared a moving tribute. “To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives,” reads the statement.
“He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.”
“To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the centre of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love.”

Throughout his career, he signed many influential artists like Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Santana, Janis Joplin, Christina Aguilera, and Alicia Keys, with him reportedly having a hand in shaping their careers.
His career had an inspiring bent to it. At the age of 28, David got his first job at Columbia Records. Having no previous music experience, he decided to take night classes to learn more and climb the ranks.
“I didn’t necessarily have an ear, but I think I developed one,” he said as reported by the BBC. “Whether there was a natural ear that was triggered, I don’t know the answer to that. But when you see a Joplin or a Springsteen, you know.”

Following the news of his death, many musicians and collaborators have shared moving tributes. “Over here on E Street, we mourn the death of the great record man and close friend Clive Davis,” wrote Springsteen on Instagram. “At 22 years old, he changed my life when he signed me to Columbia Records. He treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success. A great man. All our prayers and love.”
“My heart is heavy with the loss of my friend Clive Davis. For fifty years we worked together, created together, argued together, and celebrated together,” said Barry Manilow in a statement to USA TODAY. “Yes, some would say it was business. But to Clive, it never was. It was family. And I was honored to be a part of his. Thank you Clive. I wish we could do it all again.”
Patti Smith also shared her thoughts, thanking Davis for his support throughout her career. “This is thanking Clive Davis for transforming music, and on a very personal note, for believing in me, shepherding my efforts, and a half century of your love and support.”
