Karl-Anthony Towns is celebrating a championship victory while honoring the two women who have had the biggest impact on his life. Following the New York Knicks’ 94-90 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on June 13, which secured the franchise’s first NBA title in over 5 decades, the 28-year-old star reflected on the support system that helped him reach the pinnacle of his career.

When asked about his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, who died from COVID-19 complications in April 2020 at age 58, Towns shared a touching message about the enduring presence he feels from her. “Her presence is always felt in my life,” Towns said after the championship-clinching victory.

After a weeks-long battle with COVID-19, Jacqueline Cruz, the mother of Karl-Anthony Towns, died as a result of the virus. She was 59.

The emotional moment quickly turned into a tribute to his fiancée, Jordyn Woods, whom he credited with helping him navigate one of the most difficult periods of his life. “You always pray you’re going to pick the right woman for you and I know I did in my fiancée,” Towns said. “It’s crazy, when she passed, there was so much turmoil in my life. Funny enough, my fiancée was the one, who was a friend at the time, was the only person I got to call before I had to go out there and say bye to her at the hospital.”

The couple announced their engagement on Christmas Day last year after years of friendship had blossomed into a romantic relationship. According to Towns, their connection was built on a foundation much deeper than attraction. “Me and her have a real bond that goes deeper than just physical features and everything like that,” he explained. “We’ve got a true friendship that was built from the ground up.”

The Knicks center recalled asking Woods to help him hold onto his mother’s spirit during the darkest moments of his grief. “I remember just always asking her if this was going to be my last time seeing her in the physical, let me feel her spirit at all times,” he said.

Even amid the pressure of the NBA Finals, Towns said he continues to feel comfort from both women. “In moments of true pressure and a lot of things going on, I always feel this calming come to me, and it’s always her,” he said. “It’s just great to always feel her arms around me and always to feel her love in my life, in so many different ways.”

Towns added that Woods has shown him a level of devotion he had never experienced before. “It really means a lot that, in a way — without sounding weird — Jackie Jr. was able to be here celebrating this moment with me,” he said, referring to Woods. “It’s amazing. It’s truly a humbling feeling when you know you have walked the path. I stayed faithful. In every decision that I was supposed to make, I made the right one. Feels good to be at this moment.”

Karl-Anthony Towns Has Long Honored His Mother’s Memory

Throughout the Knicks’ championship run, Towns frequently spoke about feeling his mother’s presence. After New York’s Game 1 victory on June 3, he told ESPN’s Inside the NBA that he experienced an unexpected sense of peace during the matchup. “I just felt a calm and a peace that had to be coming from the woman above,” Towns said. “I felt like a kid, it was just fun out here.”

Despite the pressure of competing on basketball’s biggest stage, the All-Star said he felt transported back to his childhood. “It’s just something as a kid that you always dream about,” he continued. “You always hope to just be an NBA player, let alone be in the NBA Finals.”

He added, “In a way I felt like I was seeing her in the stands and it was fun. It felt like a certain presence that was here that was very comforting and very loving and I felt like I could have fun out here.”

A Love Story Built on Friendship

Towns has frequently spoken about the strength of his relationship with Woods and the role she has played in his personal growth. In his recent cover story for Haute Living, the dominican decent NBA champion opened up about the foundation of their five-year relationship.

“I definitely like stimulating conversation; that’s always been my thing,” Towns said. “That’s what me and Jordyn have always had. And that’s what’s kept us always on our toes.” He added, “I’m just trying to treat her right. My mom would not have allowed me to treat her wrong.”

The athlete also revealed that love remains the driving force behind his life and career. “Love is something that’s big in Dominican culture, especially,” Towns said. “I’ve always talked about it, even at my mom’s funeral. She taught me what the word really means, how it really is.”

Reflecting on the support he has received from Knicks fans throughout the season, he continued, “I just hope they see me evolve as a man and they respect that evolution.”

For Towns, success ultimately comes down to one thing. “[The greatest luxury in life] is always love. And out of love comes respect. That’s my goal every single day: to continue to be worthy of it.”

Embracing His Dominican Heritage

The four-time NBA All-Star also credited his Dominican roots with shaping the man he has become. “It’s given me the most special woman in my life,” Towns said. “It’s given me the chance to experience her culture and be part of her culture.”

He added, “I’m just blessed that I have the chance to represent my mother’s country. With all the love and support shown me, not only in basketball but in life, in teaching me how to be a better man, it’s only right that I give back.”
