Katie Holmes is notoriously private, but couldn’t resist sharing a rare personal post on Sunday June 21 as she marked Father’s Day.
The Dawson’s Creek actress posted a picture of a Polaroid featuring her and her beloved dad, Martin Holmes, hugging. In the picture, Martin looked smart in a suit and tie while Katie wore a stylish white top. “Happy Father’s Day,” she simply wrote alongside the picture.
Katie’s father, a well-known attorney based in Ohio, reportedly played a supportive role in his daughter’s high-profile divorce from Tom Cruise back in 2012.
Katie and Tom married in November 2006, seven months after welcoming daughter Suri Cruise in the April of that year. Katie filed for divorce from Tom in June 2012, and they reached a settlement in just 11 days, granting the actress sole custody of their daughter.
While Katie and Tom have never spoken publicly about their separation or Tom’s current relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, Suri – now 20—dropped her father’s surname, instead going by ‘Suri Noelle,’ a tribute to her mom, whose full name is Katie Noelle.
Katie’s parents have played a hugely supportive role in her life post-divorce, and are often pictured visiting her in New York City. Martin and his wife, Kathleen, raised their daughters in Ohio, where they still live. Katie is the youngest of five siblings and has three older sisters – Holly, Nancy and Tamera – and an older brother, Martin Jr.
She previously told Glamour: “I have three sisters and three sisters-in-law; I have learned from them. I’m inspired by them.”
Katie has been pictured on the red carpet at several high-profile events with her parents over the years, and her mom even teamed up with her back in 2024 for a special collaboration with fashion brand A.P.C. Kathleen – who used to have a successful drapery business – designed a quilt for the collection.
Chatting to InStyle, the actress said proudly: “My mother had a very successful drapery business, but then when I was born — I was a lot of work. [laughs] So she gave it up. But my mom is an incredible quilter, and one of my sisters is an art teacher, so I grew up with that.”
In 2024, Katie became an empty nester when Suri left home, but her only daughter often returns to NYC to visit. At the time, the star touched upon Suri flying the nest during an interview with Town & Country.
She said, “Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy.” Suri is a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is thought to be studying an arts subject.
