The Prince of Wales has sat down virtually with Travis and Jason Kelce for their podcast, New Heights, where the trio talked about American and UK football at length. As well as discussing England’s win against Croatia in the World Cup, which was just before the episode was filled, William also made a very candid confession about his father King Charles and football.
Asked whether King Charles had got him into supporting Aston Villa, which is William’s favourite team, he replied, laughing, “Absolutely not. My father hates football. My family [hasn’t] got a particularly long history with football. There are a few of us who support teams.
“My football love came from friends taking me to my first match and at school growing up. You can’t. You can’t avoid the football chat. It’s everywhere. Yeah. And some school friends or childhood friends of mine took me to my first game.”
Does King Charles really not like football?
It’s interesting that Prince WIlliam claims that his father categorically “hates” the sport considering that he has previously said to be a Burnley fan. Once asked why he backs the club he said: “Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.” Following the revelation, Burnley reportedly gave the King a VIP season ticket for the club.
Meanwhile, Prince WIlliam’s love of the ‘beautiful game’ is clear to see, as he passionately supports his personal and national teams at every given opportunity. He is also Patron of the Football Association and has instilled a love for the game into his children. While his eldest Prince George has followed in his father’s footsteps with a love for the claret and blue side, Aston Villa, his daughter, Princess Charlotte has gone against the grain to support Premier League rivals Chelsea. According to reports, the youngest Prince Louis is still undecided about who to cheer on.

The English pubs are staying open to the early hours of Monday morning so that England football fans can watch the game which kicks off at 1am UK time. If England beat Mexico, it will be time to face Brazil or Norway in the Quarter finals. In the podcast, Prince William confirmed to the NFL brothers that he will travel to the US if the side progresses to the World Cup final and even invited them to join him.
