Madonna is using her music to process her problems. The legendary pop star is gearing up for the release of her next album, “Confessions II,” which is billed as the sequel to her beloved dance pop record “Confessions on a Dance Floor.” In a new interview, Madonna references some of the issues she addresses on the album, including a rift with her daughter, Lourdes Leon.
Madonna was on the cover of Interview, discussing the album with the magazine’s editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg. “Well, all these symbolic things happened,” she said. “My stepmother died, my brother was ill, my brother died, my daughter approached me… you know what I mean?”
Madonna’s brother died in 2024, weeks after the death of her stepmother. While she didn’t clarify what happened between herself and her daughter, she revealed that the two mended their relationship with a song. “The song I wrote with my daughter, Lola. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship,” she said.

Madonna revealed that all of the music in the album has a purpose. “It’s hard for me to write a song about nothing. I have to tell a story,” she said. “So I wrote about a lot of family trauma, and then we started making dance music.”
Madonna and Lourdes Leon’s relationship
Madonna and Lourdes have discussed their relationship publicly in the past, addressing some of their differences.

“I needed to be completely independent from her as soon as I graduated high school.”
Despite it all, the two appear to respect each other, especially as Lourdes has grown up and begun to reference her mother in her own work. In that interview, Lourdes recognized her mother’s work and legacy. “She’s probably the hardest worker I’ve ever seen. I didn’t inherit that, unfortunately. I inherited her control issues, but not her work ethic,” Lourdes joked.
Earlier this month, Madonna shared a short film featuring her music and having numerous cameos from celebrities, artists, and friends. Lourdes had a special appearance in the project, being featured in some of its final images.
