Every year, the grounds surrounding Windsor Castle become the stage for one of Britain’s most prestigious social gatherings.

Royal Ascot, the United Kingdom’s most celebrated horse racing event and one of the most important in the world, draws members of high society and senior royals alike. Beyond the racing, the event often offers subtle clues about the evolving dynamics within the Royal Family.

Princess Beatrice was a familiar face at Royal Ascot before missing this year’s prestigious racing meeting.

This year, one absence has been particularly noticeable. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York have yet to make an appearance at Royal Ascot, one of the most prominent fixtures on the royal calendar.

Their continued absence follows a pattern seen at other major royal events since their father, Prince Andrew, was stripped of his royal duties and titles. Meanwhile, Zara Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne, has taken on a more prominent role, appearing alongside Princess Zahra Aga Khan, sister of the current Aga Khan.

A visible distance from Windsor:

Recent gatherings involving the Royal Family, both public and private, have reflected the changes that followed King Charles III’s decision to remove Prince Andrew from public royal life.

The move came amid ongoing controversy surrounding Andrew’s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Although Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have never been linked to any of the scandals involving their father, the sisters have nonetheless found themselves increasingly absent from the public spotlight.

Their reduced visibility has been widely viewed as part of a broader effort to prevent controversy from overshadowing the monarchy.

The first major sign of this shift came earlier this year when the York sisters did not attend the traditional Easter Sunday service at Windsor. Now, for the second time in 2026, they have also missed Royal Ascot, one of the oldest and most significant social events in British high society.

Zara Tindall takes on a more prominent role:

Their absence has left a noticeable gap. Last year, Princess Beatrice rode in the third carriage of the Royal Procession alongside Princess Zahra Aga Khan. This year, that role was filled by Zara Tindall.

The daughter of Princess Anne stepped seamlessly into the position, accompanying one of the most intriguing royal figures on the international stage. It is customary for distinguished guests to be paired with senior members of the royal circle during the procession, making the role both symbolic and highly visible.

As Princess Zahra Aga Khan’s companion for the day, Zara helped bring the third day of Royal Ascot to a close in style, reinforcing her increasingly prominent place within the extended Royal Family.

Who is Princess Zahra Aga Khan?

The daughter of the late Aga Khan IV, one of the most influential figures in international high society and a longtime ally of the British Crown, she has deep ties to the equestrian world that made her father a legendary figure in horse racing.

A successful horse owner and breeder in her own right, Zahra has continued the family’s racing legacy and has previously taken part in the Royal Procession at the invitation of King Charles III.

Her appearance at Ascot also reflects the longstanding relationship between the House of Windsor and the Aga Khan family, a bond strengthened over decades through personal friendship and a shared passion for horse racing.

As Royal Ascot continues, the absence of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie once again raises questions about what role the York sisters will ultimately play within a monarchy that appears to be redefining its priorities under King Charles III.
