Infanta Sofía continues building out her role in the Crown’s institutional agenda.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s youngest daughter has her third solo official engagement this Wednesday in Zaragoza, where she’ll preside over the awards ceremony for the Ibercaja Foundation’s Docentes Referentes (Standout Teachers) program. It’s a meaningful stop for her; she’s been the foundation’s honorary president since February, with the event kicking off what’s shaping up to be a packed few weeks on her calendar.

But there’s more to today’s surprise than that. Not only did Infanta Sofía show up early for the working sessions, but she was accompanied by her sister. Princess Leonor moved up her planned return, originally set for this Friday at her military graduation ceremony at the General Academy of the Air and Space in Murcia, so she could support her sister on her big day.

The two women spent the day taking part in an initiative that started as the Crown’s way of recognizing teachers as drivers of social progress, educational innovation, and the well-rounded, ongoing development of children and young people. King Felipe VI’s daughters sat down with the winning teachers, who came from Zaragoza, Granada, Valencia, and Valladolid, representing five innovative projects recognized for their impact on education across Spain.

Another Step in Her Institutional Path

This engagement marks a new milestone in Infanta Sofía’s institutional career. It’s set to be the venue where she delivers her first official speech, at 7 p.m. at the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Cogullada. It’s one more step in a track record that’s entirely geared toward supporting, representing, and reinforcing the values and responsibilities the institution rests on, something that shows up clearly in her schedule over the coming weeks.

This Friday, Infanta Sofía will attend the Reales Despachos de Empleo ceremony at the General Academy of the Air and Space in Murcia, where Princess Leonor will wrap up her three years of military training. She’ll also take part in the Princess of Girona Awards on Tuesday, July 14.

The two sisters typically follow up the next day with a joint visit to one of the regions the awards are named for.

Step by step, as she continues her studies at Forward College, Infanta Sofía has become a clear figure in preserving and strengthening the institution alongside her sister. This is an expectation that her father made clear when he laid out an educational path meant to prepare her to meet her commitments to the Crown.

The Project Chosen for Her First Speech

The kind of project tied to her role is telling in its own right, and it’s the backdrop for the first speech Infanta Sofía delivers this afternoon.

This inaugural round of the Ibercaja Foundation’s Docentes Referentes awards drew 478 applications from every region in Spain, underscoring the level of interest within the education community and the range and caliber of teachers across the country.

In the first round, a panel of experts narrowed the field to 25 finalists, five per category. From there, the jury picked the top candidate in each of the program’s five categories, with Infanta Sofía taking a personal interest in all of them.
