Queen Letizia has done it again. She’s long been an expert at letting her wardrobe do the talking, and yesterday was no exception. The King and Queen and their daughters traveled to New Jersey to enjoy the thrilling World Cup final, where Spain’s national team secured its second Women’s World Cup title.
It was a historic moment that once again brought the royal family together for another major sporting event, and all four of them, as expected, coordinated their looks as a show of support for Spain. For the occasion, Queen Letizia brought back an impeccable, flattering dress that also told its own story.
While the King added a discreet nod to the national colors with a red tie and their daughters chose, respectively, a blouse and pants in that shade, the Queen went one step further and did what she does best: let her clothes speak for her. She wore a red dress again which, far from being a coincidence, sent three different messages at once.
Queen Letizia’s dress at the World Cup final
The look was a midi design by Adolfo Domínguez that stands out for its timeless elegance and classic silhouette. With a round neckline, short flared sleeves, a defined waist that creates a flattering silhouette without being overly tight, and a fluid A-line skirt with a front slit, it’s one of those dresses that works thanks to its clean, understated lines.
As mentioned, it’s not new to her closet: the Queen had already worn it for previous official engagements, most recently this past May 20th at the Luis Carandell Journalism Awards.
The choice of red was, of course, intentional. Without wearing the official national team jersey, a rare option among dignitaries seated in the VIP box at this kind of match, the King and Queen and their daughters found a way to show their support for Spain while maintaining the polished look expected of senior royals. It was a gesture that made La Roja’s signature color the focal point of her outfit.
The brand she chose didn’t go unnoticed, either. For years now, Adolfo Domínguez has been one of the Queen’s go-to brands, and she has made the Spanish label one of her favorites both at home and abroad. Once again, she showcased Spanish fashion on an international stage watched by millions of viewers.
There’s one last detail that makes this choice even more meaningful. This week, Queen Letizia will travel to Galicia to visit the brand’s facilities for its 50th anniversary, as announced last Friday, an engagement that will recognize the legacy of one of the companies that has helped put Spanish fashion on the global map. Bringing back one of its designs for the World Cup final just days before hardly seems like a coincidence.
To complete her head-to-toe red look, she paired the dress with classic red slingback pumps and one of her favorite pairs of earrings: Gold & Roses rose-gold, diamond, and ruby earrings, from I Am style ($1,680) from the I Am Red collection. And, of course, she didn’t leave out her signature gold ring from Coreterno.
An expert in nonverbal communication
This is far from the first time the Queen has used her wardrobe to send subtle messages. Over the years she has shown that her outfits speak of support for Spanish designers, sustainability, diplomacy, and tributes to her family. This time, she did it again with a red dress that represented her backing of Spain’s national team, her commitment to Spanish fashion, and a subtle nod to one of the key events on her agenda this week.
“As an expert in nonverbal communication, I believe she knows exactly what message she wants to convey with each of her appearances,” image and self-esteem consultant María Moreta tells ¡HOLA! Spain. By dressing in red, the color of winners, for this event, “she projects an image of self-assurance, confidence, and of course, power,” the expert explains.
