Queen Margrethe delighted royal watchers with a cheerful new appearance as she joined Princess Isabella’s graduation celebrations, looking happy and relaxed while spending time with her family at Fredensborg.
The Danish Royal House shared a new series of photographs from a family lunch held at Chancellery House following Princess Isabella’s recent graduation from Øregård Gymnasium, offering an intimate glimpse into the family’s midsummer gathering.
One particularly heartwarming image showed the former monarch smiling alongside her granddaughter as they enjoyed the sunny occasion together.
For the celebration, Queen Margrethe embraced a vibrant summer look in a yellow gingham dress featuring puffed sleeves and a coordinating statement belt. She completed the ensemble with oversized sunglasses and a floral brooch, adding her signature flair to the cheerful outfit.
Meanwhile, Princess Isabella looked effortlessly elegant in a sleeveless deep-red V-neck top paired with a flowing white maxi skirt.
The 18-year-old accessorized with layered gold necklaces and delicate jewelry, while her traditional student cap served as a reminder of the important milestone she recently achieved.
The gathering comes just days after Isabella celebrated her graduation surrounded by her parents, King Frederik X and Queen Mary, as well as her siblings Crown Prince Christian, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine.
Earlier photographs released by the palace captured emotional family moments, including warm embraces between Isabella and her parents and coordinated summer looks worn by the princess and Queen Mary.
A welcome sight after recent health concerns:
Margrethe’s appearance is especially significant following a challenging period for the former queen, who has faced a series of health setbacks in recent months.
In May, the 85-year-old was hospitalized after experiencing angina pectoris and underwent a successful balloon angioplasty procedure. She was discharged several days later and returned home to recover.
Just days after leaving the hospital, Margrethe was readmitted when doctors discovered a large blood clot in her hip region linked to a previous fall. Following treatment, she was released in good condition and returned to Fredensborg Palace, where she has continued her recovery.
The health concerns followed several difficult years for the beloved royal, including major back surgery in 2023. Her declining mobility and ongoing health challenges were widely viewed as factors that contributed to her historic decision to abdicate the Danish throne in January 2024 in favor of her son, King Frederik X.
Returning to public life:
Despite the recent health scare, Queen Margrethe has gradually resumed public engagements.
Earlier this month, she made her first official appearance since her hospitalizations when she hosted the presentation of the Prince Henrik Prize at Fredensborg Palace.
Her joyful appearance alongside Princess Isabella offers another encouraging sign that the former monarch is continuing to recover well while remaining closely involved in family milestones.
As for Princess Isabella, the young royal is preparing for an exciting new chapter. Following the summer holidays, she will begin military service with the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse, marking the next step in her journey after completing her school years.
For now, however, the newly released photographs captured a proud family savoring a special moment together, with Queen Margrethe’s radiant smile providing one of the most reassuring images yet since her recent health challenges.
