The Dutch queen’s striking paisley motif carried special significance, reflecting a design deeply connected to India’s textile heritage.

During her time in Mumbai, she participated in discussions focused on inclusive economic growth, women’s financial well-being, and meetings with senior officials, including Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra.

Queen Máxima revives a paisley-print favorite with a special connection to India:

For the occasion, Queen Máxima turned to a trusted wardrobe favorite, reviving a blue paisley-print wrap dress by Zimmermann that perfectly reflected the cultural heritage of her host nation.

The intricate paisley motif carries deep ties to India. While the pattern originated in ancient Persia, where it was known as boteh, it became closely associated with the Kashmir region, where artisans incorporated the design into the luxurious shawls that gained worldwide recognition between the 15th and 18th centuries.

By choosing the eye-catching print, Máxima appeared to offer a subtle yet thoughtful nod to India’s rich textile traditions, reinforcing her reputation for using fashion as a diplomatic tool during international visits.

A beloved Zimmermann dress returns to the spotlight:

The midi-length design, known as the Fiesta dress, first appeared in Queen Máxima’s wardrobe during her previous visit to India in September 2022.

She wore it while visiting the Jaipur boutique of Amrapali Jewels, where she joined Princess Diya Kumari in exploring traditional Indian jewelry craftsmanship.

The queen later repeated the look during a visit to Amman, Jordan, in June 2023, proving it has become one of the standout pieces in her travel wardrobe.

How Queen Máxima refreshed the look in Mumbai:

Rather than recreating the ensemble exactly, Máxima updated the dress with carefully chosen accessories that embraced local style influences.

Through thoughtful fashion choices, the Dutch queen once again demonstrated the power of style as a diplomatic tool.

She draped a large coordinating scarf over one shoulder, a styling choice reminiscent of traditional garments commonly seen throughout the region. The addition brought movement and elegance to the look while enhancing its cultural resonance.

The queen also carried her handcrafted Amazonia bag by LH Handmade, a crocheted design created by artisans from Argentina’s Loma Hermosa region. She paired the textured accessory with coordinating strappy sandals and completed the ensemble with colorful crystal earrings that added a playful touch to the sophisticated look.

A carefully curated wardrobe for India:

Máxima’s latest appearance follows another diplomatic fashion moment earlier in the trip, when she wore a Natan Couture ensemble featuring ethnic-inspired prints in green and white, two colors prominently featured in the Indian flag.

The look, originally worn in 2021, was paired with artisanal accessories, including a beige crocheted Amazonia bag by LH Handmade, Valentino Garavani’s Rockstud wedge sandals, and new jewelry pieces consisting of a matching necklace, bracelet, and hoop earrings.

Throughout the visit, Queen Máxima has once again demonstrated her ability to balance cultural sensitivity with her signature style, using fashion to honor her hosts while remaining true to her own distinctive sense of elegance and innovation.
