The Royal Palace of Amsterdam once again provided the setting for a glittering state occasion, with Queen Máxima showcasing some of the most impressive jewels in the Dutch royal collection.

The event marked the conclusion of the state visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbender, who were welcomed to one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious royal residences.

While Queen Máxima naturally drew attention throughout the evening, Princess Amalia also emerged as one of the stars of the banquet, wearing the Star Tiara, a jewel that holds special significance in her royal journey and is steeped in centuries of Dutch royal history.

Queen Máxima dazzles in 665 diamonds and 33 sapphires:

Queen Máxima played a leading role throughout the day’s engagements, accompanying the German presidential couple during the state visit. For the banquet, she selected the historic Sapphire Tiara, one of the most treasured pieces in the Dutch royal jewel collection.

The tiara is composed of 665 diamonds and 33 sapphires and originally belonged to Queen Emma. Following the death of her husband, King William III, Emma served as regent during the minority of her daughter, the future Queen Wilhelmina.

The tiara carries considerable historical significance. Queen Emma wore it during her daughter’s inauguration, and it later became closely associated with Queen Juliana, who frequently chose the piece for major royal occasions, including the Dutch state visit to Luxembourg in 1967.

Queen Beatrix later continued the tradition after ascending the throne, before Queen Máxima adopted the tiara as one of her signature state jewels. Notably, Máxima wore it at the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander, linking the sapphire tiara to the beginning of her own era as queen.

After also wearing the piece during celebrations surrounding the accession of Luxembourg’s Grand Ducal couple last October, Queen Máxima once again selected the historic tiara to welcome Germany’s head of state.

Princess Amalia steals the spotlight:

Now a familiar presence at state banquets, Princess Amalia chose one of the most meaningful tiaras in her personal collection, the Star Tiara.

The heir to the Dutch throne first wore the tiara at the coming-of-age celebrations of Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, an event that marked her official tiara debut.

The jewel had previously been worn by Queen Máxima on her wedding day to King Willem-Alexander, adding an extra layer of symbolism to Amalia’s choice.

The tiara’s diamond stars became a glamorous statement from the young princess, who has often spoken about her fascination with royal jewels and European tiara history.

In a conversation with author Claudia de Breij, Amalia revealed her enthusiasm for royal jewelry, saying that she loves tiaras and can identify virtually every major tiara in Europe and trace its origins.

The Star Tiara is considered one of the most important jewels of the House of Orange-Nassau. Crafted in white gold and set with diamonds, it features five star-shaped diamond ornaments that can also be replaced with pearl elements.

These decorative motifs once belonged to Queen Emma, the great-great-grandmother of King Willem-Alexander.

By choosing two tiaras so deeply rooted in Dutch royal history, Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia brought together past, present, and future in a spectacular display of royal tradition at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam.
