The wait for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally over, and Mexico City Stadium was transformed into a vibrant celebration of passion, culture, and sport. Shakira, J Balvin, and Belinda brought the music to the opening ceremony, once again showcasing the power of Latin talent on the global stage.
Just before the tournament’s opening match between Mexico and South Africa kicked off, another major star stepped into the spotlight to welcome the world to the host nation: Salma Hayek.
The Mexican actress, who has become a prominent cultural ambassador for her country, appeared at midfield to speak on behalf of the nation where she was born and which she proudly represents.

As Salma noted in her speech, Mexico and the venue formerly known as Estadio Azteca have hosted the World Cup before. The stadium first welcomed the tournament in 1970, when Brazil captured the title under the leadership of the legendary Pelé. Sixteen years later, in 1986, Mexico once again became the host nation after Colombia unexpectedly withdrew.
