Sharon Stone is opening up about one of the biggest medical decisions in her life. The actress revealed she was diagnosed with breast tumors, with her doctor suggesting a double mastectomy. She revealed she agreed to go through the procedure, creating a rift in her marriage that led to her divorce.
Stone discussed the experience on the podcast “The Person Who Believed In Me,” sharing that the story took place in the early 2000’s, when she learned she had large tumors in her breasts after a mammogram. “One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast,” she said.
“And the doctor had come out to my house and said, ‘Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad. And we usually, when they’re all the way up into here, we know before we go in that they’re cancer.'”
While Stone was certain that she didn’t have cancer, she still acceded to the procedure to be as safe as possible. “I am deciding that I will have a bilateral because I’m not f—ing around,” she said.
Her husband’s shocking response
Stone said her husband wasn’t supportive of her decision, calling it “ridiculous.” “And got up and left the room. He was furious,” she said.
The host seemed shocked by her story. “He was mad about the breasts being removed?” he asked.
“Yeah,” said Stone. “And so the doctor said to him, ‘If I had more patients like her, we’d have more women alive today. You need to sit down.’ And I said, ‘I make the decisions, not you.'”
Stone believes the moment was a turning point in her relationship. “That was the end of the marriage,” she said. “That was it. He was done with me then. It was over. It was just over in the room. You could just tell. It was over. It was just over. He thought I was ridiculous. He thought it was foolish. He thought I was making too many decisions myself.”
Stone has been married twice; her first husband was Michael Greenburg, whom she married in 1984 and divorced in 1987. Her second husband was Phil Bronstein, whom she married in 1998 and divorced in 2004.
Stone concluded that she ultimately didn’t undergo the bilateral double mastectomy. She did get the tumors removed. In her memoir “The Beauty of Living Twice,” she revealed that her surgeon had implanted larger breasts in her without letting her know. “He had changed my body without my knowledge or consent,” she wrote.
