Mindy Kaling revealed the personal reason behind her health transformation. The actress, writer, and producer shared that becoming a mom completely shifted her perspective on wellness and longevity. In a new interview with Bustle, Kaling explained that her decision to lose more than 40 pounds was no longer rooted in appearance.
The 46-year-old star, who shares daughter Katherine, 8, son Spencer, 5, and daughter Anne, 2, said motherhood changed the way she thinks about her health. “I want to live at least 20 more years for my children,” Kaling shared in the interview published Tuesday.
The former “The Office” star admitted she feels dramatically healthier than she did before. “Do I wake up every day being like, ‘I look amazing and I’m so gorgeous?’ No, unsurprisingly, but I truly feel so healthy,” she said.
Her Weight Loss Goals Changed With Age
Kaling explained that her mindset surrounding weight loss has evolved significantly. “When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons,” Kaling said. “Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes.”
The actress revealed that diabetes runs heavily in her family. “I had it on both sides of my family and trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me,” she continued. “And that’s my goal.”
Fans Had Mixed Reactions to Mindy Kaling’s Slimdown
Kaling also acknowledged the complicated reaction some fans have had to her transformation. “It’s sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight,” she admitted. “You have an idea of what they were like when you grew attached to them, and it made them endear themselves to you.”
Still, Kaling said she understands public scrutiny comes with being a celebrity. “Of course, it’s never a joy to be scrutinized, but also I truly understand it, as someone who consumes pop culture,” she added.
How Mindy Kaling Lost Weight
Speculation around celebrity weight loss has intensified in recent years, particularly with growing conversations around GLP-1 medications. According to Kaling, her results came from lifestyle changes rather than restrictive dieting. “I eat what I like to eat. If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it,” Kaling told Entertainment Tonight in 2022.
Kaling first began publicly discussing her wellness journey in 2020. By 2023, she revealed that her doctor told her she was “the healthiest [she’s] been in years.”
