Amanda Owen regularly shares social media updates chronicling her farm life in North Yorkshire, but her latest post has sparked a fierce reaction. The English shepherdess shared a video over the weekend addressing the “top question” she gets asked about her rural routine, and fans were forced to come to her defence after the post was inundated with “disgusting” comments about her appearance.
The Our Yorkshire Farm star, 51, was dressed for the mild springtime weather in a crop top while addressing the ongoing lambing season outdoors in a field. While the video focused on her farm life, many of the comments expressed concern about her recent “thin” appearance.
Fans on the defence
Fans were quick to slam the comments “body shaming” the shepherdess and urged those speaking on the star’s physical appearance to “stop”.
“The comments here are shocking. Why are you following a farmer to comment on their appearance,” one person wrote. “This amazing woman and her family are ‘at the gym’ almost every hour of the day, yet these comments are disgusting. Shame on you all.”
“It’s not ok to body shame, please stop,” someone else commented, while another asked for people to “leave the lovely woman alone”.
“There are some very, very strange people on here who clearly cannot judge what is an acceptable thing to say,” one fan remarked. Another commented a gentle reminder: “What ever happened to if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything?”
The star, who has previously shared her mental health struggles with anxiety and depression, as well as suffering an eating disorder following her 2022 split from her husband of 22 years, Clive Owen, has opened up in the past about online trolling.
“I was called, among other things, a bag of bones. I still get trolled,” Amanda told the Daily Mail of online comments she got about her weight loss.
She added: “I remember sitting in the sheep pens in the dark, just hiding. It’s the price you pay for living your life in the open, for being observed. It’s like having a post mortem before you’re dead.”
Dealing with online backlash
After being in the spotlight for so many years, Amanda is no stranger to her private life being critiqued online. In September last year, the mum of nine opened up to HELLO! about how she deals with her parenting methods coming under fire.
“I have my moments of absolute crappiness, you know, I get the letters home, no PE kit, wrong shoes, haven’t filled in the form, sent them with pond water in. Yeah, yeah, all the rest of it,” she told us.
She continued: “I think you have to get to a point where you have to assess yourself and say, ‘Am I happy with who I am? Am I happy with how my children are?’, and then after that, do your thing. [The opinions] are not actually anything out of the ordinary. It’s just there that we seem to be far more shouty about everything now.”
