Anya Taylor-Joy has her loyalties split with the World Cup. The actress, who was born in the US but raised in Argentina and England, is navigating challenging waters when it comes to the soccer allegiances in her home.
While promoting her new series “Lucky” on “Live with Kelly and Mark,” Taylor-Joy was asked about the team she’s rooting for throughout this tournament, with the interview taking place ahead of Argentina and England’s game.
“It’s tricky. In my heart of hearts, I’m for Argentina, but as you said, I am part of a household that’s also for England, for Spain…” she said, very seriously. “It’s tricky.”
Kelly Ripa said that even though Taylor-Joy was navigating challenging waters, she was still in a good position. “So you’ve got really no loss here. There’s really no loss. No matter who wins, you win,” she said.
When asked about her diplomatic response to the issue, Taylor-Joy had the perfect answer. “My grandfather was actually a diplomat in Argentina. That’s how my mom met my dad.”
“No way!” said Ripa.
“He worked in Anglo-Argentine relations, which is what I’m attempting to do currently,” concluded Taylor-Joy.
Ultimately, Argentina advanced to the finals, defeating England 2 – 1. They will face Spain this Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Over the past, Taylor-Joy has spoken about her heritage and how much she loves Argentina. Earlier this year, while promoting “Super Mario Galaxy,” she revealed she wanted to work in Argentina so that she could live there for a few months.
“I would love to work in Argentina only because I’d love to live there again for a while,” she said in Spanish. “I would love to. It’s been two years since I’ve visited, and it hurts. I miss my family a lot, and I miss the country. So I would love to be able to go back. Obviously, to work but also to live.”
She also revealed that she really wanted to find a part that was Argentinean. “I’d love to find an Argentine character to play. I would love to use my own accent,” she said.
