Penélope Cruz was one of the key guests at this year’s San Sebastián Film Festival. She was there to support her own film, the much-anticipated “La Bola Negra,” alongside its directors, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. The film is competing in the festival’s Perlak section. She made a statement with her clothing.
Where Cruz’s outfit the night before leaned into jeweled, corseted spectacle, this look went in the opposite direction. She opted for a dramatic floor-length black gown with an almost architectural silhouette, finished with a feather detail at the chest.
The dress is a part of Chanel’s Cruise 2026/27 collection, the first Cruise lineup designed by Matthieu Blazy since he took over as creative director of the house.
On the runway, the piece was shown with an elaborate bow headpiece and a pleated, veil-like structure layered over it, which Cruz disregarded, letting the gown’s volume stand on its own.
© WireImageThe fitted bodice gives the dress its structure up top, while the skirt builds outward from the waist in broad panels of fabric, folds and layers, exaggerating the silhouette as it falls. It’s a lot of dress, with a bold personality needed to anchor it.
The night before, Cruz opted for a black Miss Sohee minidress, covered in embroidery and appliqués, with a strapless corset top and a short skirt. It was also a black look, showing her preference for the color at the film festival.
Cruz wore the Miss Sohee dress for “The Invite,” the film directed by Olivia Wilde, which has also amassed some awards buzz. Some film experts have their hopes on Cruz nabbing two nominations this year, both for Best Supporting Actress.

The San Sebastián Film Festival is one of the most important and prestigious events in the world. Cruz has a special connection to it, with it granting her the Donostia Prize back in2019.
“La Bola Negra” is expected to perform well during this festival. Directed by Los Javis, the film draws on an unfinished work by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, weaving together the lives of three men across time, from 1932, 1937, and 2017. It stars Glenn Close, Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos González, Lola Dueñas, and Miguel Bernardeau, who joined Cruz on the carpet ahead of the screening.
