Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato have millennials screaming after a recent reunion. There has been confusion surrounding their friendship for years. The once close starlets drifted apart, even unfollowing each other in the mid-2010s. But last night Gomez was in the audience for her old friend, having the time of her life.
Lovato kicked off the opening night of her It’s Not That Deep Tour in Orlando on Monday, and Gomez was there, fully locked in, rocking her merch, and sharing photos and videos with her followers on Instagram.
TMZ reported they had a backstage moment together before the show. After the show, she confirmed what fans had already spotted, sharing a photo with Lovato.
Gomez went on to hype her up. “I am in tears… this was hands down one of the best shows. Oh and the VOCALS? blown away,” she wrote on another photo.
Demi saw it and responded in the IG story comments, “Thank you so much for coming!! Loved seeing you.” Eagle-eyed fans also noticed they followed each other on Instagram again.
Lovato shared a gallery from her big night, and in the mix were another gorgeous photo of the girls posing together, looking happy to be reunited.
Aside from two icons being together, fans of the millennial Disney drama know why this moment is huge. The two go all the way back to childhood, meeting on Barney before becoming Disney Channel staples with Selena on Wizards of Waverly Place, Lovato on Camp Rock, and Sonny with a Chance.
They were genuinely close, doing YouTube videos together and growing up side by side in an industry that doesn’t exactly make that easy.
But things shifted, and by the mid-2010s, they had drifted apart and unfollowed each other in 2014. The public appearances together stopped, and in 2020, Demi was pretty direct about where things stood, saying they weren’t friends anymore.
After Demi performed “Anyone” at the Grammys, which she recorded just days before her 2018 overdose, Gomez showed her support publicly. She posted a message praising the performance, calling it “beautiful, inspirational, and deserved,” and thanking Demi for her “courage and bravery.”
But Demi later admitted the gesture caught her off guard. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt…” She told Harper’s Bazaar before stopping herself and saying, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.
But over the past year, there have been small signs that things were softening. Demi praised Selena’s recent album, I Said I Love You First, on Watch What Happens Live, and her then-upcoming wedding to Benny Blanco, saying, “I couldn’t be happier for her—she’s engaged. I just wish her the best.”
And last month, she spoke about their early friendship on the Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast. “I felt this safety… having a built-in friendship,” she said, “I’m so grateful for that, and will always be grateful for the friendship that I have and continue to have with her.”
