Whoopi Goldberg showed off her major weight loss transformation while reuniting with her daughter in a rare red carpet appearance.
The 70-year-old Oscar winner stepped out on Monday, July 13 with her rarely seen daughter, Alexandrea Martin, 52, for the opening night of The Whoopi Monologues at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in New York City.
Whoopi looked chic in a cream dress over a black top, accessorized with simple jewelry. Her daughter supported her mom in a black blazer with white stripes on the arms and a white top.
The View host originally premiered The Whoopi Monologues in 1984. It’s a one-woman show that’s been reimagined for the stage in 2026, starring Dominique Fishback, Kecia Lewis, Danielle Pinnock, and Kerry Washington.
Inside Whoopi Goldberg’s weight loss
Whoopi has been public about her weight loss. After suffering a back injury from running on wet grass, she started using the GLP-1 medication Mounjaro.
“I had to do those shots because I got sciatica,” she told the Daily Mail in October 2025, revealing that she had fractured the vertebrae between her bones after “doing something I told people specifically not to do, which was to run on wet grass.”
“I was running like Fred Flintstone,” Whoopi continued. “And I slipped, went up in the air, did a flip, and came back to the ground.”
Instead of resting, she continued working. Whoopi was shooting the 2022 historical drama Till and was prescribed steroids to manage her pain. But the treatment caused her to gain weight. Critics thought she changed her appearance for the role by wearing a fat suit.
“There was a young lady who writes for one of the magazines, and she was distracted by my fat suit, in her review,” Whoopi explained during a 2022 episode of The View, referencing a line that Entertainment Weekly reported was first published in The Daily Beast. “I don’t really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know that was not a fat suit, that was me.”
“I was 300 pounds,” she said during a May 2024 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Off-screen, Whoopi explained a lot of people didn’t notice any changes in her body because of her dedication to wearing oversized clothing.
“My clothes are always big, so no one can ever tell what’s going on under there,” she joked.
Whoopi Goldberg and her daughter, Alexandrea Martin
Whoopi welcomed her only daughter, Alexandrea Martin, on May 9, 1974. She shares her with her first husband, Alvin Martin, who she was married to from 1973 to 1979.
Like her mom, Alexandrea is an actress and producer. She starred alongside her mom in Sister Act 2 and The Color Purple, and produced the short films, Descendants and Sensitive Men. Outside of work, Alexandrea is married to Bernard Dean, who she has married a total of three times.
The couple are parents to three children, daughters Amara and Jerzey and son Mason, and grandparents to Amara’s daughter Charli Rose Burr-Reynaud.
“I’m a bad influence,” Whoopi told People of the time she taught her then-2-year-old grandson how to say the F-word. “My daughter said, ‘Where did he get that?’ And I said, ‘Well, it sounds like you taught it to him.’ She didn’t talk to me for a week.”
But, regardless of how the actress chooses to be a grandparent, Whoopi and Alexandrea are very close. “I’m proud to call her my best friend,” she said of her daughter while introducing her as a guest on The View in 2016. “She is one of the most trustworthy and loyal people I know.”
